it was our sixth, annual fall party during the middle of october. we had all the cousins over and a few neighbor friends. all the family around here came, except grandma mc, but grandma moncur made it! it was a beautiful saturday afternoon and the kids all worked really hard doing chores, cleaning, ect that morning to get everything ready.
we did all of our traditional games including donuts on a string, pumpkin bowling, costume relay, and bobbing for apples. i also added in a bean bag toss this year and instead of homemade cookies (grandma mc was not here, bless her for loving to cook), we made fun oreo spider creations!
afterwards we had a baked potato, chili bar that everyone helped out with and then ben and brad and most left to go back to work and we cleaned up. we had a wonderful time! our only misfortune was having our front door open so much during dinner. SO many flies came into our house. it has been a super late freeze this year, so we have had flies plaguing us, they especially love our brick! we were glad we could have a little time to spend with grandma too.
nothing says fall like harvest. sure, we harvest hay all year long, but actually combining corn, or digging something up (memories of beet and potato harvest growing up), just make my heart feel good, especially if you can tell the yield is up!
last week was corn combining. although we tried hard to stick to our afterschool routine, all the kids had to ride the combine and in the trucks. we had to go late and drive people around to drop off rigs. trucks were coming in and out late...and the boys and i went and climbed to the top of the machine and scooped out a 5 gallon bucket of corn to grind.
bentley was on top of that the next day after school! we tried it in a delicious cornbread/taco bake that i brewed up, and it was great. too bad corn prices are so crappy...but harvest was the best, and we were done just in time for halloween!
