the last 3-4 weeks, i fired up the old canner and cranked out some goods. there have been pickled beets, lots of green beans, apricot jam, and now into the dill pickles. bentley has been my little helper when it comes to snapping beans. he holds strong till the end of the bucket. i've also had some help when i was down and out from my old comp emily (came for a visit!) and my mother in law. thx guys!
both bentley and bridon LOVE cucumbers out of the garden and corn on the cob. they enjoyed their first ear on a field 'picnic' a few weeks ago where i brought it with some meatloaf that a stray dog nearly packed off. the nerve! when it comes to the dills though, tragically, i am a failure at a good, crisp gherkin. i tried to switch it up a bit and went and hauled water over from ben's aunt to see if the unsoftened, unsulfered water would make a difference. sadly, no. i am still in pursuit. i use alum, i follow the same recipe of my grandma's that my aunt and cousins make amazing pickles with, and i am still going to make it happen this season...wish me luck! next up is pizza sauce, peaches, fruit cocktail, and stewed tomatoes, after that i'll probably go nuts!

Maria, you always inspire me to be a better homemaker! So far I've only frozen peas and made strawberry and rasberry jam. But beans are coming up next week. Good luck with the pickles.
Wow! Way to go! I wish I could talk my children into eating vegetables...but you've seen how they are. I hope you are not crazy after this week! Thanks for your help!
That is so awesome! I am pretty good at making freezer jam and blanching corn...and dring fruit. Other than that...I need work! Holly is pretty godd at all that too! Our apricot season was over in June so I didn't get a chance to make any because I was in school! (I do start up on the 24th)
Good luck on your pickles! Let us know if you get it right!!
maria, you're amazing! you're always going, going, going. you're like the energizer bunny. were you like that as a little kid? i know you were like that in college - always freakin' busy!
You are the homemaker I always wanted to be! One day I will live closer and I will invite myself over to can with you :)
